A comprehensive list of prescription and over the counter medications.
Nuvigil is a proactive drug that helps with sleepiness and fatigue. Nuvigil is generally offered to patients whose sleepiness is dramatically affecting their work and personal life.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist about a modafinil allergy. You should also check for inactive ingredients you may be allergic too. Medications used to treat high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver problems, certain heart problems or mood disorders may cause a negative reaction to Nuvigil. Because Nuvigil is used to increase awareness and "wake" your mind and body up, do not abuse stimulants (like methamphetamines), while on the medication.
Nuvigil is FDA-approved for use to treat excessive daytime sleepiness caused by narcolepsy, shift work disorder and obstructive sleep apnea. Medical professionals to treat chronic fatigue syndrome, major depressive disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have also used this drug.
All of the approved uses are for different types of sleep disorders however; it has been discovered effective for the mentioned and other psychological disorders.
A study was done using Nuvigil to treat Schizophrenia and, while, the initial study failed and was terminated, a later study showed patients exhibited fewer negative symptoms of the disorder when treated with Nuvigil.
A short study was done to use Nuvigil to treat jet lag. The FDA denied approval.
The most common side effects were nausea, dizziness, insomnia and headache. Other side effects include dry mouth and anxiety. Serious, but rare, side effects include yellowing skin/eyes, dark urine, and persistent sore throat, signs of infection, mental health changes, bleeding or bruising and unusual tiredness. If you experience any of these, contact your doctor immediately.
You should consult with your doctor or pharmacists about before starting Nuvigil some medications. These include high blood pressure medication, alpha-blockers, seizure medications, street drugs, and anti-fungal medications.
This medication can also decrease the effectiveness of birth control medications and possibly make your other medications less effective, including over the counter medications.
If you suspect an overdose, call Poison Control immediately or go to the emergency room. Never share your medications with others. If you miss a dose, take it once you remember and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take the missed dose close to bedtime, as you may have trouble sleeping.
