A comprehensive list of prescription and over the counter medications.
Propecia
Propecia is a drug used for promoting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, in the body.
Propecia is most commonly used for treating male pattern hair loss. This is a common condition where the hair thins on the scalp, or the vertex. This causes a receding hairline or balding on the top of the head. Propecia is for use by men only.
Warnings and Precautions
Pregnant or potentially pregnant women should not use or even handle Propecia tablets when they are broken or crushed. This is due to the fact that women could absorb finasteride, the main ingredient in Propecia, which provides a risk to a male fetus. Children and pediatric patients should not use Propecia. Some patients may experience hypersensitivity, or reactions such as rashes, swelling of the lips, throat, toungue or face. Patients who have liver issues should be very cautious when taking Propecia and follow their doctor’s directions, since finasteride is metabolized in the liver. As with any medication, Propecia should be prescribed specifically by your doctor.
No particular drug interactions with Propecia have been identified.
Side Effects
Men may experience decreased sex drive, trouble getting or keeping lasting erections, and a decrease in the amount of semen. Some of these symptoms may continue after stopping the medication.
The chest may become tender and enlarged. You should notify your doctor if you experience pain, nipple discharge, or lumps.
Some people may experience depression, testicular pain, infertility or poor semen quality, or allergic reactions such as hives. In rare cases, some may develop male breast cancer.
Some men may experience a decrease in blood Prostate Specific Antigen, or PSA, levels. It may affect a blood test taken for diagnosis of prostate cancer. Make sure to notify your doctor when doing a screening, since Propecia descreases your PSA levels. Men may also face an increased risk of a serious form of prostate cancer when taking an amount of finasteride that is 5 times the regular does of Propecia.
Overdose
A single dose of 400 mg, or multiple dose of finasteride of up to 80 mg a day for three months did not result in adverse reactions or overdose. Further tests must be completed to understand how to treat an overdose of finasteride. If you feel that you are experiencing adverse side effects or an overdose you should call your doctor immediately.
