10 Herbs that Help the Body Heal

By Shannon Pierce

Ahh, the smell of basil fresh from the garden. Mmmm, the minty flavor of a fresh mojito. Yumm, a whiff of oregano as your pizza bakes in the oven.  You may not realize it, but the herbs that you use from time to time may have some hidden health benefits. Here are just a few ways that herbs can heal various health problems, as well as how to work them into your diet.

First, whether you are traveling, have morning sickness, or just plain feel nauseous, ginger is known for helping with nausea. It calms the digestive tract, even more so than some over the counter drugs. Zest a little over your hot tea next time your feeling uncomfortable.

Many of us could benefit from a little extra energy. If you are feeling particularly tired, cilantro could give you the boost you need. Cilantro can remove toxins in your blood, decreasing depression, fatigue, and even joint paint.  Cilantro goes great with Mexican food. Sprinkle it on a salad, over your steak, or salsa.

Basil can boost your mood in no time by increasing your brain’s production of serotonin and dopamine. Eat it with tomatoes and fresh mozzarella.

Cayenne pepper can help with sinus pressure and stuffiness. Since this spice is so spicy, just a touch is needed when sprinkling on meats, rice or chili.

Parsley is a natural diuretic, helping to flush extra water out of your system, if you are feeling a little puffy.  Throw some on your pasta or mix it into your meatloaf.

Dill can fight powerful bacteria, such as E. Coli, in your intestines.  Make a crunchy cucumber salad with dill, or sprinkle it over your salmon.

If you have achy joints after a hard day of work, you may find some relief with curry powder.  Doctors say that it can help just as much, if not more, than medication.  A popular Thai spice, curry can be found in rice and lentils.

Mint can reduce painful stomach cramps or spasms. It’s great in hot or cold beverages, such as tea, or those mojitos we talked about.

Oregano helps with a different kind of cramps, the dreaded menstrual cramps, preventing painful contractions.  A must on pizza and tomato sauces.

Last but not least, rosemary can help with both sore throats, and chest congestion. Totally tasty when rosemary is roasted with potatoes or even sweet potatoes in the oven.
