5 Healthy and Wholesome snacks for your baby

By Shannon Pierce

For all the moms and dads out there who thought they were creative for making their own meals, just wait until you hear the little pitter patter of your children’s feet running around your kitchen. You have a whole new mouth to feed and their health to worry about.  Although it may seem a bit daunting at first, with the right tools and recipes, you can feed your baby very healthy and inexpensive foods, fairly easily!

Here are five simple, healthy foods to feed your baby, age permitting of course.

One of the simplest go-to snacks for your baby can be a mashed up banana. These things are portable, and if they get a little squished in your diaper bag, who cares!

Another portable snack is an avocado.  When they are ripe enough, they will mash easily and provide plenty of nutrients for your baby.

Now, onto sweet potatoes. When baked properly, they don’t even need to go into the food processor! These puppies are soft, sweet and can be a huge hit with your little one. Scrub them, prick them with a fork and set them on a roasting pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. You should be able to spoon out the flesh right into a jar, Tupperware, or onto your baby’s feeding table.

While there have been mixed reviews about when to introduce whole eggs to babies versus just the yolks, today most doctors recommend the full egg as long as there is no family history of food allergy. As with any foods, always be sure to check with your doctor to determine when is the right time to introduce eggs to your baby. Here is one idea that mixes whole grains with your protein.  Beat one egg yolk in a bowl, then stir it into your oatmeal in the last five minutes or so of cooking.  Keep stirring until cooked thoroughly.

Now onto the purees. This is where it gets super easy and super healthy. Try pureeing zucchini. Wash it, remove both ends, slice, and boil, steam or microwave until tender. Puree away. They can be somewhat watery, so eventually you can mix them in with other vegetables to avoid any soggy texture.

These five recipes are all nutritious and easy to digest. Babies could not be any more ripe for learning to try all of these fresh and yummy foods. Get them started young!
