Are Protein Shakes good for you everyday?

By Shannon Pierce

To protein shake or not to protein shake? That is the question. Many of us have seen the guys and gals at the gym shaking their little bottle of chocolately substance.  We may have even seen our co-workers coming into work with a little bottle of their “breakfast.” What is with all the protein shake madness? Should we be drinking one every day? Every other day? Let’s find out what it’s all about.

Protein shakes consist of a protein powder, whey, soy or hemp for example, either blended with ice or shaken with water and ice. Some choose to blend or shake with milk or almond milk, and others add other supplements or nut butters as well.  Some people consume them as a snack, meal replacement, or workout recovery drink.  While it used to be a common beverage for body builders, people are adding extra protein in their diet with the shakes to achieve all types of diet and exercise goals.

Now, to answer the question about consuming protein shakes every day, it may not be a requirement for your diet or your protein goals.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends about 56 grams for men and 46 grams for women per day.  The National Strength and Conditioning Association recommends that athletes consume 1.2 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. Eating more protein than that will not harm you, as long as your diet is balanced.  For people with medical issues, you will want to consult with a nutritionist, dietician, or doctor about your protein goals.

One way that you can determine if you are eating enough protein in your day is by logging an average day of eating in a food tracker. These can be found on the internet or downloaded as free applications on your phone. You may be surprised to learn that your diet consists largely of carbohydrates.  Others may find that they are in fact eating enough protein in their day and that a protein shake supplement might not be necessary.  However, some people choose protein shakes as snacks and meal replacements out of the convenience. They are simple and quick to prepare and they can be consumed on-the-go.

If you do choose to add these shakes into your diet, be aware of the serving sizes and any extra calories you add into your shake, such as dairy or peanut butter.
