Determining which type of protein bar is the right fit for you

By Shannon Pierce

We have the ultra-powerful-carbo-protein-loaded, the itty-bitty-rice-crispy flavored, or the chalky-choco-crunch weight loss bar. When it comes to protein bars, you may be standing in the grocery aisle scratching your head.  Some of us want to eat one as a meal replacement, others want to snack on one as a weight loss supplement, and others of us might just want to downright maintain our healthy lifestyle.  The good news is, protein bars don’t have to be itty bitty or chalky anymore.  They are tastier than ever, and once you find the right one for your goals, you will be five bites closer to optimal health.

If you are trying to gain weight or muscle mass, you will start by looking for one with more calories and more protein.  Cliff-Builder bars may have just what you need. You will want to choose a bar that is closer to the 280-calorie range. For some guidance, Bodybuilding.com rated the following as the best protein bars of the year:

    Quest Nutrition Quest Bars

    ISS Research OhYeah! Bars

    Promax Protein Bars

    Supreme Protein Carb Conscious Bar

    BioNutritional Power Crunch Bars

    Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal Bars

If you can’t find these in the grocery store, try your local GNC or health food store.

Next up: the snack, the weight loss bar, the craving killer when you want something ooey-gooey and chocolatey. Many women make the famous mistake of gnawing on a Cliff Bar come 3:00 when they are hungry.  A Cliff Bar, for example, is not a weight loss bar. Atkins bars may be more up your alley. They have meal or snack options and they come in various flavors.  Quest Bars as noted above, can be incorporated into your diet as long as you leave a little wiggle room for 180 calories for a snack or dessert. While on the topic of Quest Bars, those things are seriously decadent, chewy with giant chunks of Oreo-like cookies or chocolate chips depending on the flavor you choose. Two really tasty ones are Cookies and Cream or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Yum!

Quest bars or Atkins bars may also be appropriate for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, since many Americans need to lower their carb intake and up their protein. Just be careful not to eat a bar that was designed for a meal replacement as a mid-morning snack. Finally, if you want something crunchy like a wafer, try the Power Crunch bars. Happy tasting!
