Detoxing is a myth. Diet and Exercise is the only way to get Healthy.

You have just returned from a long vacation. That vacation may have been filled with booze, burgers, fries, maybe some desserts, some more booze, and boom, vacation over. You return to the real world feeling bloated, tired, and a few pounds heavier. In some extreme cases, you even feel a little shaky as your body craves another 5:00 daquiri. Yikes. Just before you go into work and think about skipping breakfast to jump start your weight loss efforts, a commercial comes on television offering a discount on juicers. They pair it with a detoxifying supplement that is supposed to rid your body of impurities and reduce cravings. Wow, you think, “I could be back to five pounds lighter and feeling better in no-time!”

 

STOP. It can be so hard not to get sucked into the “detoxifying” vortex out there. With cleanses, juices, supplements, smoothies, shakes, even shampoos, the options are endless and even appealing when you want to feel healthier quicker.  Today there are detox teas, colon cleanses, bath salts, luxury getaways, massages, and tons of fad diets. However, research shows that there is no such thing as detoxing when it comes to ridding your body of toxins that come from food and alcohol.

 

United Kingdom scientists asked manufacturers of 15 different products claiming to detoxify for evidence behind their claims. None of those manufacturers could either define what they meant or even name the toxins they claimed to get rid of.

 

Of course, after only drinking a juice consisting of ginger and apple cider for a week, you are going to be stinking skinny.  That doesn’t mean that you are “detoxed.” If there were toxins in your body that it couldn’t naturally get rid of, you would be in the hospital or dead. Every moment your organs are detoxifying on their own. Sure, eating superfoods are great for you and may make you feel great, but eating only broccoli for a week is not a sane or balanced diet.

 

NHS dietician Catherine Collins explains your liver is breaking down alcohol when you drink. However, when you drink heavily your liver can be damaged. Of course, after a total drinking binge weekend, cut it out! She explains, “Moderate and occasional drinking, though, might have a protective effect.”

 

So what is the key to avoiding all of the marketing scams? Collins explains, “The ultimate lifestyle ‘detox’ is not smoking, exercising and enjoying a healthy balanced diet like the Mediterranean diet.”
