Dog Owners tend to be Healthier

It’s no secret that helps make us happy and add tremendous value to our lives, but new research shows that dog owners may just live longer. The recent study shows that pets can make us healthy. Dog owners tend to be healthier than those without. Dog owners showed a better BMI, less depression symptoms, and fewer chronic conditions.

This study tracked 916 people. They were split into 3 categories: those with no dogs, those with dogs who didn’t walk them regularly and those with dogs who did walk them regularly. Those who walked their dogs regularly maintained a healthier BMI, were more active overall, showed fewer depressive symptoms and reported less chronic conditions.

Whether you’re a regular gym goer or not the study shows that exercise with your pet can be more beneficial than on your own. It’s been shown that those with pets at home recover more quickly after a hospital stay and report a better outlook throughout their healing.

If you’re not a pet owner you can still enjoy these added health benefits just by interacting with them on a regular basis. Volunteer at a shelter or offer dog walking services.

For improved health it’s important for you and your dog to find something mutually enjoyable. Here are some ideas:

Know Your Dog

Before you and your dog can head to tackle that 5K uphill course you need to know and understand the needs and restrictions of your dog. You need to match your activity to your dog’s capabilities. A small dog is not going to be heading out for a long run with you. Whether you’re going around the block or across town with a small or large dog it’s best to use intervals. This is the ideal way for your dog to exercise and highly beneficial to your health as well.

You need to be mindful of how your dog is feeling. Dogs will push through pain and exhaustion if they are having fun with you. It’s your job to keep an eye on them and know when they need to rest.

Games Dogs Love

There will be days when getting outside isn’t an option, but you can both stay healthy with some indoor fun. Dogs of all types and sizes appreciate games like tug-of-war and fetch. An exciting game of hide and seek is great for both the physical and mental health of your dog. Another family member can hold the dog in place while you hide, then release him to find you.

The more you wear your dog out in healthy play, the less likely they are to get into trouble.

Stay On Track

Once you and your dog have a fitness routine, he will learn to expect it. This is perfect for those days you need pushed off the couch and out the door.

Maintaining a consistent fitness routine can be hard, especially during the winter months or when lives get busy. Include your dog in your fitness routine, have some fun and you’ll forget you had to force yourself out the door.
