Flibanserin better known as Female Viagra is being considered by the FDA Advisers

By Shannon Pierce

Busy schedules, children, long work hours, stress, poor nutrition, birth control pills, antidepressants, you name it. All of these factors could be contributing to a lower sex drive and a less than perfect sex life for you and your significant other. But, the news has been buzzing lately about a new drug to help to solve these problems. Could there really be a female Viagra? Could a little pink pill help women out with their low libido? Is it that simple? The time may have come where women have an option to improve their sex drive.

NBC news reports women who have tried the drug, flibanserin, experienced not only improvement in sexual desire, but decrease in stress over their lack of sexual desire.

Responses to the drug have been mixed, some claiming it is a “mediocre” drug with safety concerns, such as nausea, fainting, fatigue, low blood pressure and sleepiness.  Supposedly those symptoms can be dealt with by taking the drug at night. Some of these factors could have been why the Food and Drug Administration rejected the drug twice. Women fight for the drug, explaining that women deserve treatment options.

There are some interesting differences between the “female Viagra,” as it’s commonly called, versus the male Viagra. Flibanserin actually works on the brain, where Viagra works on the blood flow to the genitals. Flibanserin works on the neurotransmitters in the brain called serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters affect the brain’s reward center and “ability to feel pleasure,” NBC news reports.

While some may argue “Hypoactive sexual desire disorder” was made up by pharmaceutical companies, others fighting for Flibanserin argue that it is a real and serious condition not always caused by other medications such as birth control or antidepressants. Sheryl Kingsberg, a clinical psychologist and professor of reproductive biology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine explains “HSDD” is an actual medical disorder and has been for decades.

Obviously, the goal of the drug is not to make women overly sexual, but to help them find a nice balance in their sexual desire. An FDA committee will vote this week on whether they recommend the drug, then the FDA will decide if it passes or not. The FDA may require a test of at least 4,000 women to prove that the drug does what it is supposed to do with minimal safety concerns.
