How to Eat Healthier on Summer Vacation

By Shannon Pierce

Summer vacation does not mean that your diet has to take a summer vacation as well.  On so many vacations, you can find beautiful scenery to view while you exercise, you can pack your healthy staples, and you can find healthy options at many resorts and restaurants.  Here are a few tips that won’t make your trip home one of remorse over totally splurging.

1) Treat yourself. Instead of just going all out all day, think of the one treat you can’t go without. If it’s the fresh croissants at breakfast, have a small portion and then choose the salad for lunch.  If it’s a sundae for dessert, make sure your morning and lunch meals were healthy and light.

2) Fail to plan, plan to fail. Meal prep and snack prep is crucial for trips.  If you will be traveling in the car, you have it easy! Pre-made turkey and lettuce wraps, vegetable crudités, hummus, hard boiled eggs, and yogurt are all great options to put in your cooler. Now, if you are traveling by air, you will obviously need to follow the TSA requirements, but try fruit that doesn’t bruise easily and protein bars. If possible, pack enough of these snacks to last you throughout your trip, and re-stock if necessary for your trip home.

3) Do your research.  If it means scoping out the menu before hitting up a restaurant, or doing a walk-through of the buffet on a cruise, take the time to make smart decisions. There are plenty of healthy options at almost any restaurant today. Think taco salads, sans the fried bowl, grilled shrimp salads, or fresh fish and steamed veggies. You can even call ahead to restaurants, resorts, or hotels to ask what type of healthy options they may have for certain dietary needs.

4) Be mindful of your drinks, not just the alcoholic kind.  It may sound like common sense at this point, but hydration is even more crucial on vacation.  Flying can de-hydrate you, and so can hot summer sun and exercise.  You may need to drink significantly more than you do at home. Not only will this keep you hydrated, but feeling full as well.  Try drinking one glass of water for every alcoholic drink.  Carbonated beverages will bloat you, so limit sodas and beer. If booze is your treat for the day, make sure you earn it with a little swimming or walking.
