How to take care of Schizophrenia Caregivers
Caregivers of Schizophrenic patients take on a lot of stress, care and mental pressure. There are ways to make your job a little easier by working in ways to take care of yourself.
Time Heals
The job as a caregiver does get easier as time goes on. You'll find yourself able to fall into a routine (something also favored in the caring of your loved one) and you'll start to know what to expect in the way of symptoms and reactions.
Reach Out for Support
Don't be afraid to work with doctors, counselors, support groups and online researchers to feel more confident in your caretaking. This will take some of the stress off of you.
Take Care of You
It's important to keep yourself from getting worn down and burnt out. You can do this by ensuring you get enough sleep, exercise and eat well. Take time out for things you like to do and get a back up person to help with care so you can get away.
Learn to Diffuse
Schizophrenics can become aggressive and are extremely paranoid. You need to learn coping skills to help keep your loved one calm and restore their trust in you. Keep yourself calm and do not shout back or display anger. Don't try to reason with them in the moment, suggest you both sit down to gain composure.
Delusions
Most Schizophrenic patients have delusions which could lead to bizarre statements that make no sense to you but they seem very confident in. The best way to handle this situation is to state that you see things differently than they do. Their distortion of reality is very real to them and arguing the point will do nothing except break their trust of you.
You can be a great caregiver when you take the time to take care of yourself and arm yourself with skills to get through any situation.
