Pain Pill Tramadol is dangerous for children FDA says

By Shannon Pierce

Imagine your son or daughter comes home from getting their tonsils removed. They are in serious pain, so you make sure to follow the doctor’s orders and give them their prescription pain medicine as directed. Suddenly, you notice your little one is not breathing properly. Your child seems out of sorts, confused, and not like themselves. The sleepiness could just be the pain pill, but you are alarmed by the change in breathing. You rush them to the hospital only to learn that the pain pills that your child was prescribed are actually doing more harm than good.

This situation is not far from reality at all. Many children may metabolize the drug “tramadol” quicker than others, causing them to experience slow breathing, difficult or noisy breathing, or unusual sleepiness.”  It may be hard to detect, especially is your child is napping or sleeping.  One French child experienced this situation and was immediately hospitalized due to just one prescribed dose.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the situation and the effects it has on children and teens under 17.  Some doctors are prescribing the drug even though the drug is not FDA approved for children. It is legal for doctors to prescribe it, but tramadol is not recommended.

Children may especially experience such alarming symptoms after having a surgery to remove tonsil or adenoids, explains the FDA, so parents should be especially cautious as to what their children are prescribed post surgery.

Our bodies convert tramadol, an opioid, into a morphine-like drug. Most drugs in the opioid group can cause our breathing to slow, sometimes to a deadly rate. Some user’s livers, such as the child in France, convert the drug even quicker and more efficiently than others, causing a form of overdose.

Parents can talk to their doctors about the FDA approved pain pill called oxycontin for their children.  When a drug is FDA approved, there are strict guidelines that doctors must follow and they must instruct patients, including teens and children, on how to take proper doses.

Parents should also beware of tramadol, which is often sold under the brand names Ultram ER, Conzip, Ultracet, Ultram, and as a generic drug. As with all drugs, and especially for those prescribed to children, parents should always have serious conversations with their doctors about the potential side effects and what symptoms are and are not supposed to occur.
