The good news for coffee drinkers - benefits to caffeine

By Shannon Pierce

To drink or not to drink coffee? It’s the world’s most popular central nervous system stimulant. As with most things in life, everything in moderation seems to be the key.  When people starting drinking a pot of coffee before bed each night and they don’t feel phased or feel the effects of caffeine any longer, there might not be a healthy relationship with it. However, here is how a cup of joe or two a day can benefit your health.

Coffee has a ton of antioxidants. Studies show that coffee drinkers gain more antioxidants from coffee than both fruits and veggies combined.

Many studies show that coffee drinkers live longer.  In a study on “The Relationship of Coffee Consumptions with Mortality” by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, drinking coffee over a period of 18 to 24 years could lower the risk of death by 20 percent in men and 26 percent in women.  Coffee was particularly helpful in reducing the risk of death for those with type two diabetes, lowering the risk of death by 30 percent.

In a study published September 26, 2011 by the Harvard School of Public Health, researchers, such as nutrition research fellow Michel Lucas, proved that women who drank four or more cups of coffee had a 20 percent lower risk of depression than those who only drank decaf coffee, tea, sodas, or other drinks containing little or no caffeine.

Coffee is a cancer blocker. It can help protect against liver cancer and colorectal cancer, both leading death causing cancers.  The American Society for Nutrition proved in a large prospective study that drinking 4-5 cups of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee a day lowered their risk of colorectal cancer by 15 percent.

Coffee contains vital nutrients.  Much more than deep dark colored water, coffee contains small amounts of riboflavin, pantothenic acid, manganese, potassium, magnesium and niacin.

It tells your fat cells to break down body fat.  As it increases your adrenaline levels in your blood, it preps your body to exert energy and take on your workouts or your physical challenge.  It turns body fat into free fatty acids so your body can use them as fuel.  Studies show that a cup of coffee one half hour or one hour before you hit the weights or the treadmill can give you the energy you need to meet your fitness goals.
